Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball explained: how the draw works

Since September 2022, every Lotto 6/49 ticket is really two games in one: the familiar Classic Draw, where you match numbers, and the Gold Ball draw, where a single ticket number is drawn and a prize is guaranteed every time. The two work very differently, which is why 6/49 headlines can be confusing.

What you get for $3

According to WCLC, each $3 Lotto 6/49 play gives you:

  • one six-number selection from 1 to 49 for the Classic Draw (you can pick it or take a Quick Pick); and
  • one 10-digit Gold Ball Draw selection, printed by the terminal: an 8-digit number followed by a 2-digit trailer, for example 12345678-01. You cannot choose it.

Draws are every Wednesday and Saturday. You can add Extra for $1 (or Encore in Ontario) — see Extra and Encore explained.

The Classic Draw: a fixed $5 million

Six numbers and a bonus number are drawn from 1 to 49. Unlike Lotto Max, the Classic jackpot does not roll over: it is always $5 million, won or shared by anyone matching all six numbers on one selection. The prize table from WCLC:

MatchPrizeOdds per $3 play
6 of 6Win or share $5 million1 in 13,983,816
5 of 6 + bonusShare of 32.15% of the Pools Fund1 in 2,330,636
5 of 6Share of 13.5% of the Pools Fund1 in 55,492
4 of 6Share of 54.35% of the Pools Fund1 in 1,033
3 of 6$101 in 56.7
2 of 6 + bonus$51 in 81.2
2 of 6Free Play1 in 8.3

Matching just two numbers earns a Free Play — a new ticket with one Quick Pick selection and a Gold Ball number.

The Gold Ball draw: someone wins every time

After the Classic Draw, one Gold Ball selection is drawn at random from all Gold Ball selections issued for that draw. Because the winning entry is chosen from tickets that were actually sold, there is always a winner. What that winner receives depends on a second drum:

  • The drum starts a cycle with 30 balls: 29 white and 1 gold.
  • If a white ball is drawn, the selected ticket wins the guaranteed $1 million. The white ball is not put back, so the drum has one ball fewer for the next draw.
  • If the gold ball is drawn, the selected ticket wins the Gold Ball jackpot.

The Gold Ball jackpot starts at $10 million and increases by $2 million every draw it is not won. Once the gold ball is drawn, everything resets: the jackpot goes back to $10 million and all 30 balls go back in the drum.

Working through the numbers

Because white balls are removed, the chance that the gold ball comes out rises each draw: 1 in 30 on the first draw of a cycle, 1 in 29 on the second, and so on. By the 30th draw only the gold ball is left, so the gold ball must be drawn within 30 draws. Following the official rule ($10 million plus $2 million for each previous white ball), the jackpot on the 30th draw would be $10 million + 29 × $2 million = $68 million — consistent with WCLC's note that it "can grow to more than $60 million".

A neat consequence that surprises many people: standing at the start of a fresh cycle, the gold ball is equally likely to be drawn on any of the 30 draws — 1 in 30 each — because its position in the order is random. So the average Gold Ball jackpot, when it is finally won, works out to $39 million.

A real example from our Lotto 6/49 archive: the gold ball was drawn on Saturday, September 19, 2026, paying $32,000,000 according to WCLC's results. That fits the rule exactly — $10 million plus eleven white-ball draws at $2 million each. After the reset, four white balls followed, so for the Wednesday, October 7, 2026 draw WCLC advertised an $18 million Gold Ball jackpot with 26 balls remaining.

Your odds in the Gold Ball draw

Your chance of being the selected entry is one in the number of Gold Ball selections issued for that draw, which depends on ticket sales and is not published in advance. If your entry is selected, the drum decides whether you take home $1 million or the jackpot. A big jackpot attracts more sales, so the chance that your specific entry is selected tends to fall when the jackpot is high.

Notice what does not matter: your Classic Draw numbers have nothing to do with the Gold Ball draw, and the Gold Ball number cannot be chosen. No "strategy" applies.

Common misunderstandings

  • "The jackpot is $X million" — headlines usually mean the Gold Ball jackpot. The Classic jackpot is always $5 million.
  • "Nobody won the jackpot, so nobody won anything" — every draw has a Gold Ball winner: $1 million if a white ball is drawn.
  • "Fewer balls means my ticket is more likely to win" — fewer balls makes it more likely that the selected winner gets the jackpot instead of $1 million. It does not make your entry more likely to be selected.

Checking a 6/49 ticket

Check both parts: your six numbers against the Classic Draw and your 10-digit Gold Ball number against the single winning Gold Ball number, which must match exactly. The easiest way is your lottery's app or a retailer ticket checker. See our guide to checking and claiming prizes in BC and Western Canada.
